But is it all in our heads, or should we believe the hype? Expensive skincare brands often claim to possess the magical powers of unicorn tears and moon dust. Their scientific potions can make your head spin faster than a whirlwind romance. But hey, if a little jar of cream promises to turn back the clock and transform us into ageless goddesses, why not give it a shot? Plus, the personalized consultations and tailored recommendations make us feel like we have a team of skincare experts at our beck and call, which can be yours if you are willing to eat ramen noodles for the rest of the month until you get paid again.
Now, let’s chat about the budget, babes. These affordable skin products might not have the same glamorous reputation, but they know how to steal the show. You can find them strutting their stuff in the aisles of your local drugstore, whispering, “Hey, I may be cheap, but I’m effective!”
While luxury brands take pride in their elaborate ingredient lists, affordable alternatives keep it real with the basics. They rely on trusty ingredients like aloe vera and green tea, the skincare equivalents of dependable best friends. There are no fancy frills or outrageous claims here, just good ol’ reliable stuff that gets the job done. Budget-friendly heroes that save the day without emptying our wallets. These underdogs might not have fancy packaging or mythical ingredients, but they pack a punch. They’re like the superheroes of the skincare world, quietly working their magic without the need for a cape or hefty price tag.
Affordable skincare keeps it real and simple, relying on clean ingredients that have stood the test of time. Think of them as the trusty sidekicks that swoop in to save your skin from dryness, acne, or whatever villain threatens your complexion. And let’s not forget the minimalist packaging, stripped down to the essentials. Who needs all that fluff when you can have straightforward effectiveness?

Remember, all these products expire and can be really damaging to your skin if you don’t throw them away after the expiration date is up.
You don’t need to break the bank on every product; advertising just makes you think you do. Storyteller ad agencies are paid millions of dollars to make you believe a story, and they are really good at it. They distract you from what products will actually do for your skin and sell you a dream of the lifestyle you’ll achieve from using their product, like a face moisturizer will somehow buy you a new house, a fancy car, and a new boyfriend. It’s all a lie. It’s an alluring one, but it’s a distraction.
So here’s my “High-Low” list of products for every budget:
First, the one exception to the rule regarding our break-the-bank skincare beauties is Creme de La Mer. It’s the only real moisturizer that is expensive and makes a noticeable difference immediately. It runs at $165 for a 2 oz jar, and it’s not like you use it sparingly, so it runs out super quick. So, if you’re Jeff Bezos, absolutely use this cream. It’s incredible and works, but you could also have injectables for that price that boost the natural collagen in your body, like Radiesse.
The next magical cream is used by most makeup artists and is a go-to when a model is having breakouts from makeup overuse and needs to be ready to shoot in a few days. It’s affordable at $16, and it truly is a wonder cream. Literally, all the top models and makeup artists swear by it, I promise! It’s for all skin types and won’t dry you out. Perfect underneath your makeup or without it.
My good friend, Brandi Glanville from Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, swears that Neutrogena Hydro Boost cream is comparable to the soft cream by Crème de la Mer. It’s so good because it contains hyaluronic acid, which is super hydrating. Plus, it costs $18 compared to $300. Thanks, Brandi!
Eye cream must be concentrated in a delicate way I have yet to see in the budget aisle, so that would be my one must-have in the splurge section. Eye Cream Lumiere Firm ($116) contains light reflectors that help this little gem fight off any dark circles you might have from partying too hard. It’s not cheap and hard to find, so you’ll have to order online, but it’s well worth the time and effort. My facial gal, Rachel Moller, MD, brought this little ditty to my attention. She’s fantastic and always in the know!
Lubriderm Advanced Therapy Body Moisturizer is great because it holds the moisture in. It can be a little greasy, but I like that because it gives you a dewy shine. $12
I was prescribed Cetaphil face wash alongside an acne treatment when I was younger, and it still holds up to this day. It is gentle but effective for all skin types and feels like silk. $11.97
Last but certainly not least, prescription Retinoid cream has saved my skin on more than one occasion because it unclogs pores and is anti-aging. It’s been around since the 70s and is hailed as a cure-all because it is! This product will typically only set you back $30, but make sure to take regular breaks from using it so it doesn’t lose its magic.
So, if you choose to embrace opulence or revel in practicality, remember that taking care of your skin is the ultimate victory, and it doesn’t always have to promise you the world and ship you an atlas. Using even one or two items off my list will put you on the path to better skin. Now go have some fun with it!
